Welcome back ladies and gentlemen. The day I have waited for long time has finally arrived. I present you, Bold 2 (9700) running OS 6 (6.0.0.344). As I have mentioned previously, Ms. Ayin had granted the permission to use her phone for this project and as of 1930hrs 20/11/2010, the project was done successfully.
I won’t be going into so much details because in my previous post, I’ve embeded a YouTube videos showing a complete walkthrough of this OS running on 9700. So lets dive in!
note: while running some test, I couldn’t complete a few task because my SIM card is not activated with BIS support. Tomorrow perhaps, when Ms. Ayin pops in her her SIM, I will put up another review.
So today, I did minor test which involves web browsing, messaging and few calls. The result was magnificent. The whole process of upgrading the device took almost 30-40 minutes to complete.
The 1st step I did was to wipe the device from OS5. I deleted the vendor.xml file and also preloaded tmobile themes. After switching on the device, something I didn’t expect occured. A short boot up video covered the screen before it jumped to the set-up screen. This is pretty impressive of OS 6. Since this is not what I expected, thus I didn’t manage to capture it.
After running through the set up screen. I inserted my SIM card and dialled some numbers (because I’m going out tonight, I felt it is best I brought it along with me). The calling screen also had been revamped to a new UI. The overall call is clear and I have no problem with network coverage.
Prior to this, I did a desktop backup for the contacts and settings on the previous version. Restoring the backup also didn’t show any problems during the entire process.
Since I’m new to this OS, it took me awhile to get used to getting around. But I’m fortunate enough because in OS 6, u dont have to spend so much time clicking here and there to get to each section of the phone. This is because OS 6 has implement the new universal search bar at the home screen. Thus, from here, u can navigate to anywhere u like (ie: service book locations).
Setting up the WiFi was also hassle free by all means. Once the phone is connected to the WiFi, I straight away went to the browser. The so-called webkit browser incorporated in this OS deserved a standing ovation. The web page renders almost instantly. If u entered any web address, it will automatically brought u the mobile version of that website. However, even if u revert the display to show the desktop version, the phone didn’t seem to have any hiccups.
Several other section of the phone that I would like to point out here is the camera. The UI had a new look and extra features added to this are scene modes. Like any other modern digital camera, camera on OS6 also provides with different settings for photo shoot; macro, landscape, portrait etc. The picture quality on this phone also has been improved.
Alright. I guess, that pretty covers anything. All in all, RIM has come up with a refresh UI for this version of the OS. Blackberry still functions the same; the best mobile communicating device. For those who are familiar with the previous OS will take OS 6 as a refresher and gives your good ol berry a new look. As for the conclusion of this post, Bold 9700 does have the guts to run OS6 seamlessly. So for those Bold 2 owners out there, even though 9780 might have a better hard ware specs, but don’t be ashamed of your 9700. It will look as good as the new one too.
For the rest of this post, I will show u guys, the other revamped section of the OS.
That’s all folks. Bye!
